The bulk of educational games fail to achieve learning outcomes due to bad design: cognitive dissonance between mechanics and moral messaging, mismatch of form and content & sacrifice of free play to rote learning. An analysis of the few games that are exceptions to this rule can help game designers create simulations and educational games with a wider appeal and deeper impact about issues as vast, abstract and seemingly intractable as avoiding and preparing for climate change.
